THE STORY BOOK
THE STORY BOOK
The traditional Sicilian cart was born in 800 but, probably, its real origins are very ancient.
The first “carrettieri” (carters) started to paint their carts with religious scenes or Saints, to be protected from bandits and adversity during their travels.
Over time these decorations became more and more complex and the themes of decoration became more assorted: Sicilian puppets, the Cavalleria Rusticana, myths, history, and many others.
The cart then became a book on two wheels, born to communicate and impress, decorated to attract the curiosity of the people who came closer admiring the beauty and, at the same time, reading the stories it told.
Today, colorful and rich, it has become the subject of a few great artists who make, using these traditional decorative techniques, even everyday items.
The Sicilian decoration of the cart requires the artist time, diligence and dedication, in the effort to grow and reach the perfection that, sometimes, lasts a lifetime. But this certainly worths unique and inimitable pieces.
The inspiration of the decorations is Sicily and its stories.
Land of sun, colors and volcanoes. The scent of orange blossoms accompanies the summer evenings and the landscape is studded with the colors of oranges and lemons, as in a picture in which the painter has only strong and bright tones.
The stories of the Sicilian Puppets, the Greek myth or even more recent stories are played against the background of a strong nature, immersed in a dazzling light.
Orlando and Rinaldo duel for the beautiful Angelica in the glow of the lava gushing profusely from Etna volcano and the nymphs move quietly the water of the springs. Whatever the inspiration, the story told is always full of passion and love, raising man from earthly affairs.
